Victoria Prize and Victoria Fellowship applications open

Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business Louise Asher today announced that applications are now open for the 2013 Victoria Prize for Science and Innovation and the Victoria Fellowships.
“We are now seeking applications for two of Victoria’s most prestigious science and innovation programs, which provide opportunities for emerging scientists as well as established scientific leaders and researchers,” Ms Asher said.
“Two $50,000 Victoria Prizes for Science and Innovation – one in physical sciences and the other in life sciences – as well as 12 Victoria Fellowships worth $18,000 each are on offer.
“Since 1998, the Victoria Prize for Science and Innovation has recognised some of Victoria’s most outstanding innovators and researchers, celebrating excellence in science, technology and engineering.”
Past Victoria Prize for Science and Innovation winners have included individuals who have been recognised for their contributions to the treatment of heart disease, the discovery of a new class of anti-influenza virus drugs, bioinformatics, stormwater management, and the development of the world’s first plastic bank note.
The two winners of the 2013 Victoria Prize for Science and Innovation will each receive $50,000.
Researchers in the early stages of their careers are encouraged to apply for the $18,000 Victoria Fellowships. The Victoria Fellowships enable early career researchers in science, engineering and technology to undertake international study missions. Eighty-four Victoria Fellowships have been awarded since 1998.
Ms Asher said the Victorian Coalition Government is committed to supporting outstanding research and innovation.
“The Coalition Government is delivering on our election commitment to double the Victoria Prize for Science and Innovation and the Victoria Fellowships annually from 2012–14,” Ms Asher said.
“Since 2011, the Coalition Government has invested around $1.8 million in Victoria’s innovation researchers – expanding Victoria’s excellence in science, engineering and medical research. This commitment will increase to $4.8 million during the next three years.
“The increased investment fulfils the Coalition Government’s election commitment to increase the number of scholarships, fellowships and awards made to Victoria’s innovation researchers, ensuring that Victoria remains the clear national leader in science and innovation research.”
The 2013 Victoria Prize for Science and Innovation and the Victoria Fellowships are being delivered by veski on behalf of the Coalition Government. This new partnership will also see a substantial increase in the veski innovation fellowships program over the next three years and a new focus on lifting interest in science amongst secondary students, as part of the veski's inspiring students (and teachers) initiative.
Applications for Victoria Prize for Science and Innovation and Victoria Fellowships are now open, and close on Thursday 27 June 2013.
Applications for the Victoria Fellowships are encouraged from emerging innovators across engineering, science and technology while candidates for the Victoria Prize for Science and Innovation must be nominated.
