Budding Victorian secondary school scientists and science communicators...

More than ever STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) is involved in our everyday lives. In order to make well-informed decisions, about our health, our environment and even politics, we all need accurate unbiased information.

An important responsibility for any scientist, budding scientist, or science communicator is sharing the science and passion for their subject.  Science communication is a powerful tool to provide people with information that inspires and informs.

We have all heard about fake news right?  It is more important than ever to be able to identify and cut through false information and effectively and accurately communicate Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

One of the most effective ways to get a message across is by using video - and we are able to create amazing video using everyday devices; phones, tablets and computers! The best part is that we are able to do this anywhere – from our schools, or from our homes, which during these challenging times and with home schooling is a big plus!  So, what is the ask?
  

The challenge…

veski wants YOU to get creative and produce a STEM video to compete for the veski STEM filminators video of the year!

As a veski STEM filminators, simply choose a STEM subject and how you create the video is entirely up to you!  It could be a video to convince kids to get into Engineering, a short documentary - perhaps on a new scientific discovery or a topic you have been learning in a STEM lesson - anything goes...animation...film... as long as it is about STEM!  

 

Key information

Groups of up to 5 students can collaborate to produce a STEM video, with the finalists to be shown during National Science Week.  Individual entries are also allowed.

The STEM video must run for approximately 100 seconds (that’s 1 minute and 40 seconds).

An important part of the process is to identify your audience and the key message you want to communicate to them. We will be asking who your audience is when you submit your STEM video.

The video content must be your own.  If any material used within your STEM video has copyright ownership, then you must get permission from the copyright owners to use this before submitting your video to veski.  See below for some links to free sources of media.

Keep it simple….

Interested students should register NOW.  After registering, you will need to provide the names and ages of the other students contributing to the STEM video, as well as your nominated science teacher. 

When you have finished the online form and uploaded your STEM video, and pressed 'submit' an email will be sent to your nominated science teacher. Teachers are an important part of the process.  When they receive this email they will be asked to review your video. This will complete the process, so make sure your keep them posted.

 

How to upload your video

Entries must be submitted through the veski Award Force website only.

The deadline for submissions is 12.00 pm [AEST] on Friday, 7 August 2020.

Finalist’s videos will be available for public viewing during the National Science Week (15-23 August 2020).

If you experience issues in uploading your entry or have any questions or concerns about the process, contact veski via email [email protected] before the Entry Deadline.

Students – it is a really good idea to keep at least one copy of your STEM video. veski is not responsible for any videos that are lost, damaged, or that do not upload properly.

 

Guidelines

Entry is free and open to Victorian secondary schools and their students.

Groups entering the competition must be made up of students from the same school.

STEM videos should be submitted in .mp4 format. A display resolution of 1280 x 720 will be accepted but 1920 x 1080 is preferred (aspect ratio of 16:9).

STEM video must be approximately 100 seconds in duration (1 minute and 40 seconds). The total length of the video should not exceed 125 seconds (2 minutes and 5 seconds), which includes up to 25 seconds of introduction with title screen (see the next point).

The first section of the STEM video should contain a 25 second introduction, including;

- who you are (introduce yourselves),

- which school you are a student at and

- why you chose to create the STEM video subject (including who your audience is)

NOTE: The introduction has no specific format requirements and it does not count toward the 100 minutes of the main video.  It can be a presentation slide with a voice over, photographs, or a video of the team, it is up to you.  Get creative!

Students must ensure that all content in their STEM video is their own. It is the sole responsibility of the students to secure permission from any third party owners of content included in their video, including footage, music and images. veski takes no responsibility for any failure by an student(s) to obtain the necessary permissions. Videos found to contain unauthorised content will be disqualified. Each STEM video must have a Lead Producer to serve as the main point of contact. This should be the person who registers on the veski Awards Force platform.

Your details, and the details of the other students involved in the video's production will need to be added to the application form too.

No professional assistance is allowed. Non-students may assist with production but are limited to verbal guidance only (like teachers). Adults and non-students are allowed to be actors or cameramen but not content contributors.

veski reserves the right to include an information page or introduction to the video with veski information at the beginning or end of a submitted STEM video.

Judges will make their selection based on the accuracy of the science content, your science communication skills and your originality in communicating the STEM subject.

The judges’ decision is final.

By submitting your entry, you give veski a non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable licence to use and reproduce your entry in whole or in part for the purposes of veski STEM filminators video of the year program or the purposes of promoting veski activities more generally.

Important information for teachers

Teachers are an important part of the STEM video submission process.  Students will submit the details of their nominated STEM teacher, including their email address as part of their online entry.  Once students have completed the form online, uploaded their video, and pressed 'submit' an email will automatically be generated to the nominated STEM teacher named within the application.

At this point the nominated teacher will be asked to review the student video submission and complete a declaration including;

  • Confirmation that the science communicated within the STEM video submission is accurate to the best of the teacher’s knowledge.
  • On behalf of the students, the teacher will be required to confirm that, to best of their knowledge, all content (footage, music, and images) used in the STEM video submission has all the appropriate permissions secured. veski will not take any responsibility for any failure to obtain the necessary permissions and that STEM videos found to contain unauthorised content will be disqualified.  
  • To confirm that confirm that appropriate parental permissions for each student listed in the application is held by the school to take part in the veski STEM filminators video of the year program.
  • To give veski, on behalf of the student and school, a non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable licence to use and reproduce the STEM video submission in whole or in part for the purposes of veski STEM filminators video of the year program or the purposes of promoting veski activities more generally.
  • Lastly the teacher should declare that they have reviewed the STEM video and the application submitted by the students and confirm that the STEM video complies with all the necessary requirements set out.

Teachers are required to approve the videos by 12 noon on Tuesday, 11 August 2020.
